Retford FC Announces Shock Name Change to Ordsall FC
In a surprising twist sure to ruffle feathers across the town, Retford FC have announced they will officially change their name to “Ordsall FC” starting next season.
The club, formed in 2015, revealed the news this morning with Club Chairman Chris Woodhead confirming the change was a reflection of the club’s “true roots and untapped potential.”
He said, “Let’s face it, Retford is great and all, but Ordsall is where the future lies. We’ve always been on the edge of Ordsall geographically speaking so It’s time to embrace our Ordsall identity and lead from the front—or should I say, from the railway lines?”
The decision was apparently inspired by the recent discovery of Ordsall’s ancient footballing history. Local archaeologists claim to have unearthed what they believe to be a Victorian football pitch, complete with goalposts made from twigs and a leather ball stuffed with goose feathers. Local historian Prof Ali Lo said “When Retford FC moved to what is now the Rail Ground, a group of us got together to do some research as we were aware of sporting activities in the area.”
“It wasn’t until we started scanning the soil that we realised there was something under there that over the years was covered by the building of the railway line.”
“It makes sense that the club rename - and many have suggested it so it shows that the club listens to the people!”
The club expect a bit of backlash but are pressing ahead with their plans. New kits, featuring an Ordsall skyline (including the iconic Co-op), are already being designed, and the team will reportedly unveil their new mascot, “Ordy the Otter,” at their first home match of the season.
When asked how he thought this announcement might go down with locals, the chairman simply winked and said, “Some will be delighted as they think this is where our roots now are, but we know deep down they have a lot of respect for us and wish us every success.”
