Chris Woodhead Stays On to Finish the Job at Retford FC

In a firm show of commitment and belief in the club’s long-term vision, Retford FC manager Chris Woodhead has confirmed he will remain at the helm for the upcoming 2025/26 season—marking a decade since the club’s formation.

Following a heartbreaking end to last season, where the Choughs finished as league runners-up and were narrowly defeated in the playoff final, Woodhead had a big decision to make about his future in the dugout, however, speaking candidly this week, the long-serving boss dispelled all doubts with a renewed pledge to “finish the job.”

“I’m not going to lie, but last season was soul destroying,” Woodhead admitted. “To finish as runners up and then lose in the play-off final was a bitter pill to swallow. We had a lot of highs including a long unbeaten run and of course the derby double, but I was devastated to lose out on the final game of the season.”

Despite the disappointment, Woodhead has taken stock of the club’s rise since its inception in 2015. From beginnings in the Central Midlands League, Retford FC has risen to Step 6 football, competing in the Northern Counties East League and more recently the United Counties League. Woodhead has been there for every moment—amassing nearly 400 games in charge.

Reflecting on the journey so far, he said:

“After a short break, I’ve taken a look at what we have achieved and know we can go further. Most of the players have committed to next season already despite offers from elsewhere, and I am bringing in some new faces which will be a statement to other clubs in the league. I’ve got the hunger, and I’ve got the support network in place so 2025/26, our 10th anniversary, will be one where we push on again.”

As the club prepares to celebrate ten years of competitive football, Woodhead’s continued presence shows stability, ambition, and a shared dream yet to be fulfilled he is a manager whose passion for the badge remains as strong as ever.
